EMC, HDS & NetApp Storage Portfolio Videos now available on YouTube

As well as being one of the most expensive, your storage infrastructure is likely to be the single most critical element of your physical and virtualised IT environment. While CPU, RAM and Network resources can directly affect the performance of some of your systems, poorly sized or badly integrated storage, will damage the performance of ALL your systems and may render servers and services unusable. So it’s always worth taking the time to understand the storage that’s available and digging a little deeper to ensure it’s going to deliver great performance and good value for money. To start the ball rolling, we’ve provided three short videos that give a quick introduction to the storage offerings available from the three major storage Continue reading

Second Hitachi Content Platform video now available on YouTube

As promised the second of our two videos covering Hitachi Content Platform and it’s peripheral products is now available on YouTube. For those not familiar with the concept of HCP, watch video 1 first. This second video covers Hitachi Data Ingestor, HCP Anywhere and some archiving options. It’s very possible that content platforms will become the future of storage for most unstructured data, so if you are looking for a DropBox type architecture that YOU control, or if you are struggling to manage file services at your branch offices, you should certainly take a look. Hope you found them both useful. Constructive comments are always welcome. Tony. Related Posts  First Hitachi Content Platform video now available on YouTube Object Storage – The Continue reading

First Hitachi Content Platform video now available on YouTube

As you may have seen on previous blogs, Hitachi Content Platform looks like a very interesting direction for data storage. For those interested in taking a closer look at this disruptive technology, we’ve created a couple of short videos to highlight the key features and benefits of both the content platform itself and the peripheral products released to maximise its value and performance. It’s very possible that content platforms will become the future of storage for most unstructured data, so anyone struggling to backup their files, e-mails, or SharePoint systems should definitely take a look. The second video – is now also available here. Hope you find them useful. Tony. Related Posts  Second Hitachi Content Platform video now available on Continue reading

HDS Superior Block Storage Architecture video now available on YouTube

As a storage reseller for all the leading players, EMC, HDS and NetApp, we spend quite a bit of time reviewing the key differences between the systems. In this video – I take a closer look at the storage architecture of the three main HDS storage arrays and demonstrate how HDS’s design differs from many of their competitors. Anyone interested in how true enterprise-class storage differs from a mid-range storage array, should also find this video useful. Enterprise-class is a term that’s used a lot by IT vendors these days and my hope is this cuts through the FUD a little and demonstrates exactly what differentiates a true enterprise-class array from a robust mid-range system. Hope you find it useful. Tony. Related Posts  Continue reading

Foundation of Storage Array Design (3 of 3) video now available on YouTube

The final episode in our trilogy of videos on the basics of storage array design is now available. In these videos we go back to basics, shunning the ever increasing complexity of the modern storage array, in favour of the basic physics behind how they work and what best to look out for when you look to replace your ageing storage. Here at SNS we are vendor agnostic, so we cover the core fundamentals shared by the majority of the leading vendors and give you some insight into exactly how these systems function. The first video covers Workloads, Disks, IOPS and RAID. The second video covers Read and Write Cache, Tiering & SAN/NAS Protocols. This final video covers Network Connectivity, Bandwidth, Block Continue reading

Foundation of Storage Array Design (1 of 3) video now available on YouTube

I expect in most businesses these days there is always the possibility of over analysing a given subject. At SNS, we’ve been designing and deploying storage arrays for years, and as we get more toys like flash, pooling, tiering, caching, etc. we consider it our responsibility to dig deeper, and deeper into the science to make sure that the ‘Marketing’ stacks up, so we can provide the best advice for our customers. However, this constant digging into deeper levels of complexity can sometimes just make things hard to comprehend, even for an experienced storage specialist. So to reset the balance a bit, we have gone back to basics and produced a series of three short videos that cover, what we Continue reading

Introduction to the HDS storage portfolio video now available on YouTube

Most organisations are generally not dissatisfied with their storage providers, but at the same time they need to find a more cost-effective way to manage their ever growing quantities of data and better service the 24×7 operational needs of the business. Hitachi Data Systems is one of the very few vendors that has a storage portfolio to address all of the needs of both mid to enterprise sized organisations – whether you need block, NAS or object storage, or a new data protection solution they have a highly compelling story. Check out our introductory video to see if HDS should be on your short-list. If you would like to learn more then attend our Hitachi Data Systems Storage Showcase 2014 Continue reading

NetApp SnapProtect video 4 of 4 – VMware VMDK recovery

This is the final video in a series of 4 (see NetApp SnapProtect video 1 of 4 – Backup management and replication for the first video) delving into capabilities of NetApp SnapProtect. Recovering files is one thing, but recovering an entire drive is normally somewhat more complicated. SnapProtect makes the process straight forward and provides the flexibility to recover entire virtual machines, or individual files or virtual machine disks, from a local, remote or tape copy. In this video we demonstrate the process of performing the recovery of an entire VMware virtual machine disk file (VMDK). NetApp SnapProtect video 2 of 4 – Mounting an off-site backup snapshot NetApp SnapProtect video 3 of 4 – VM image backup with restore from file scan Continue reading
